swatch

000_0042, originally uploaded by knitomatic.

sorry i forgot to post a pic of this ... its the swatch that Lily Chin made in, like, 3 seconds while she was demonstrating her skill with the hook - she's the world's fastest crocheter! her hands are a BLUR when she crochets, it's soooo cool! some people around here are a little green with envy, but it's just downright neato-mosquito, an exceptional talent.

her suggestions for faster hooking: lube up your hook (not if you're using bamboo or birch, Chin usese Aluminum) with a bit of moistureizer. She also credits the development of her skills to a little childhood sibling rivalry.

Cashmere

People keep asking if we have Cashmere? the answer is a resounding YOU KNOW IT BABY! Only the finest for the finest.

Cashmere is beautiful, it's a pricey gift from the cashmere goat so i like to keep things classic with an emphasis on colours & textures that will never lose their presence. I'm particular about quality too: I dislike synthetic fillers in Cashmere and I prefer that the Yarns are milled in Italy, not asia.

Sweater Class Blasts Off!

kidsilkraglan, originally uploaded by knitomatic.

On the books for a while now, the long awaited SWEATER CLASS is coming to fruition.

WHO: This will be a class for people who've never knit a sweater or who are still a bit daunted by sweater projects. We will complete a sweater from start to finish together.

DATE & TIME: Sunday mornings from 10:30am to 12pm

PROJECT: we will all be working on a basic raglan sweater knit in the round. For ease & economy we'll be special ordering "KidSilk Raglan" kits from Fleece Artist, so when you sign up for the class you will order yours in your preferred colourway.
we'll be working on the same pattern so everyone is on the same page but you can always emend the pattern to suit your style: make it a cardigan, change the neckline, change the hem or cuffs. The yarn is a really lovely & affordable hand dyed blend of kid mohair and silk - nice to wear and to knit with. It's also not too thick or too thin.

COST: $10/hour for class time (approx 5 weeks, 1.5 hours per week = $75) plus $80 for the kit. Needles and notions are extra, plus applicable taxes.

PREREQUISITES: you must have basic knitting skills to attend this class. you should be able to cast on, knit, purl and cast off on your own and be able to consult a reference book. Knowledge of increasing and decreasing is useful but not necessary, as is reading patterns.

HOW: We already have 3 people committed so we should be able to start within a few weeks. Please e-mail us at knitomatic@gmail.com if you are interested in joining and please don't forget to check the colour chart and choose the colourway for your kit.

To register and guarantee your place in the class you must pay the full cost for the class and the kit.

TTC Knitalong

Re. TTC Knitalong this Saturday, Oct 1st

MEETING UP
If you are registered on the WEST team: Meet at Vienna Home Bakery (626 Queen Street West) by 10 am. Beryl Tsang is your Knit-A-Long marshall.
If you are registered on the NORTH team: Meet at the Marche cafe at the Forest Hill Loblaws by 10 am. The Loblaws is on St. Clair Avenue West, just east of Bathurst, near the St. Clair subway station. The Marche is on the top floor (look for the elevator!). Vivienne Suen is your Knit-A-Long marshall.
STUFF TO BRING
  1. Suitable streetcar knitting.
  2. Cash - unfortunately we can only accept cash for the Knit-A-Long Rabble Cards ($7.50), and you will have to pay for lunch in addition to whatever shopping we do during the day.
  3. Metropass, or TTC Day Pass -- Day Passes are available at all subway stations and some TTC ticket agents, and cost $8. Or, if you're REALLY organized, 2 adults can share a Family Pass, which costs the same as the Single Day Pass. So if you have a friend coming on the SAME TEAM as you, the two of you can split it as long as you stick together and don't get separated.
  4. Bottled water, snacks, etc. that you think you might need.
  5. Camera or digital camera, to document all the fun!
  6. iPod or other source of music. We are looking into bringing along a portable boombox, so if you have an iPod or favorite CDs to knit to, bring them along! One of our event organizers is bringing her iTrip radio transmitter, so iPod owners can "plug in" and be broadcast on the streetcar as we knit our way to The Naked Sheep.
GETTING HOME
Your TTC Day Pass will be good to get you home (it is valid until 5:30 am on Sunday morning). Some people are arranging for their DH's and the like to come fetch them at the end of the day -- if you are making arrangements to be picked up at the end of the Knit-A-Long and would be willing to drop someone else off somewhere along your way home, please let us know ASAP so we can try to ride-match people.
As always, send questions to ttcknit@gmail.com, or leave a comment at ttcknit.blogspot.com.
ATTENTION KNITBLOGGERS!!
If you have a knitting blog (or any kind of blog), consider posting photos and stories from Knit-A-Long Day. We can start a mini-web ring and continue to stay in touch!
Happy Knitting!
The TTC Knit-A-Long Crew

From WRAP STYLE this one is very me, not just because i'm cold all the time. I'd make this brioche stitch one in the Naturally Merino & Fur also, use the claret & grape for a caplet au-moment. otherwise the Debbie Bliss Alpaca & Silk would be yummy, soft, light & just the right warmth. Or go classic elegance and use a soft & smooth Italian merino from Needful Yarns/Filtes King Extra

something for you to peruse: the newsletter for the new knitscene mag from interweave. it isn't in store yet but i'll let you know as soon as it is!

according to Interweave editor Pam Allen this mag is geared towards "style-conscious women who are bored by mass retail uniformity. They are more creative, willing to push the boundaries, and not weighed down by tradition. They view their knitting as a form of personal expression and they like to get funky by merging techniques—incorporating embroidery, sewing, crocheting, and even beading into their knitting." coolio!

I want to wear one of these sooooooo bad! to be sure, it's a kit to be .... available Spetember 1st the distributor assures me, from Lily Chin's new yarn & pattern collection. Hey Everyone in the GTA,

I received a visit from an art director who's working on a commercial
for Winners and needs some knit/crochet/handcrafted purses & bags to rent. if you have stuff you want to lease send him a clear digital photo as soon as possible. they pay 25% of the retail value (including the time you put into making the thing). the commercial goes to production Wed/Thurs/Fri of next week.

ok, so people are always asking me "what's on your needles?" of course, the best way to explain is to illustrate, sooooooooooo, i set up a blog to 'illustrate' what i'm up to, more or less.

you can find my creative eavours at the end of this link: frayed at the edges

Crochet is our Friend!

rowan crochet, originally uploaded by knitomatic.

Crochet is Your Friend!
Most people don't like to knit in the summer because cotton is hard to work with. Don't give up your craft, just switch over to crochet in the humid weather!

a few reasons why crochet is your friend ....
  • Crochet is very affordable; it's perfect with mercerized cotton, which is very reasonably priced, and you do
  • Crochet projects don't have to be complicated, they travel well and they work up fast.
  • Openwork is very easy in crochet, plus you'll never again be intimidated by crochet finishing instructions in knitting patterns.
  • Crochet is hard to learn from a book but easy to learn form a person, and once you understand the basic principles you can do anything!
  • Throw in the picture above was my first crochet project ever. It looks like a big, hard project but it's the exact opposite. Its made in squares and then you put the squares together.

and 4 more excellent reasons ....

ok, a few more very good reasons...
